EVA JOSPIN ET OLAF METZEL

June 28th - September 6th 2009
Eva Jospin was born in Paris in 1975. She lives and works in Paris. Eva Jospin’s artistic research has been oriented until today to an art that includes different medium: drawing, painting, collage, sculpture.

In these last two years, the artist has been devoted to the matter of the landscape and its representation.

Dominique Païni affirms about her new works : “To look at a forest is an optical experience that challenges the typical laws of perspective in western representation. Facing visually the depth of a forest means to forget the horizon, it means to get lost. And is not the danger of getting lost the only risk tied up to that natural labyrinth that is a forest?…

Eva Jospin does not forget what lies under these brushwoods, under the foliage and the clearings: Give an endless tangle back, exceed, through the virtuosity of the eradication and the cut, the illusions of depth, experiment the limits of a frame and of a surface that tricks the eye.”

Olaf Metzel was born in Berlin in 1952. He lives and works in Munich.

Olaf Metzel is one of the most important sculptors of the actually German artistic scene.

Parallel to his personal exhibitions, he is Professor of sculpture at the Fine Arts’ Academy in Munich. He received several awards.

His works reflect his concern regarding dialectics between Individual and Society, History and Present and rejects, in this way, the pure formal art.

He is known through his sculptures and installations. Several published books give the opportunity to understand his creation using other means such as drawing or photography.

At Pièce Unique Variations some works on wood will be presented, where, starting from photos printed with ink and representing everyday elements in wood, the artist has grooved.

The fact that these works are named “woodcuts” depends on the double work that has been done on them: the image on the wood, and the wood within the image.

In the final result of this proceeding from the wood on the wood different techniques are combined at the same time : painting, photography and etchings.

Among the last events, his personal exhibition “Ultra” held at Halle Verrière – Miesenthal (Alsace) from June 28th till September 6th 2009.
